LOVE FOR THE HUNTER

Like the gaze of the gray wolf on the hunter's lonely flame,
Fearful and untrusting yet drawn there just the same ,
I'm drawn to your glance by somethin' I can't name.
There's a strange sweet smoke surrounds me
when you bend your head my way
Crouching in the frozen grass two red eyes reflect your fire.
Still they creep up closer as they drink the flickering of desire.
Not caring that a twig snapped, that you listened and you rose,
And dawn will find only a patch of bloody fur upon the snow .

But with a love for the hunter that a wild thing never feels ,
Frozen in your gunsight at your mercy I'm revealed
I stand here with contempt for the safety of the hills,Til a long cry splits the night,
As the empty ache inside me finds the bullet that fulfills
This wild thing's love for the one who comes to kill.

So soon the story ends, sadly sung and soon forgot
By the winter's sleepers burrowed deep who wake up when the shotSpatters 'cross the snow like hot tears fallin' on some cold white page
Of a love letter full of bleeding words and reckless rage

But with a love for the hunter
that a wild thing never feels
Frozen in your gunsight at your mercy I'm revealed
I stand here with contempt for the safety of the hills ,
Till a long cry splits the night,
As the empty ache inside me finds the bullet that fulfillsThis wild thing's love for the one who comes to kill.
