PALE MOON ON THE PECOS

Pale moon on the Pecos
lone star in the sky
like the bright jewel that trembled
in my poor darlin's eye,
as the bright Texas evenin'
turned to blue in my heart
and the walls of the mission
turned to gray in the dark

When I think of you darlin'
the pain it floods throough
the place in my heart where
I've forsaken you
and I sift throughmy memories
with a slow aimless hand
by the muddy old Pecos
all choked up with sand .
And I know love cuts deeper
than the hiss of the brand
or the high springtime flood of
the ol' Rio Grande

Like a fool with a bottle
threw her love in the weeds,
let the hard west wind drive me
like a blind wand'rin' seed.
And I reached for another
like a man in a fog.
Now my memory's howlin'
like a dead master's dog.

When the snow from the mesa
sprawls out on the sky
like a weary ghost ranger
who lays down to die ,
when it covers the moon like
a lover's cold lie
like a thin ragged veil 'cross
a skull in the sky,
then I know love cuts deeper
than the hiss of the brand
or the high spring time flood-tide of the ol' Rio Grande.

and I know love cuts deeper
than the hiss of the brand
or the high spring time flood of the ol' Rio Grande
